Which businesses should invest in AI visibility?
Start with the buying decision, check the evidence, and set a budget for a pilot you can judge.

An emergency plumber and a renovation contractor solve household problems, but their customers make different decisions. One needs someone available now. The other may spend weeks comparing estimates, exclusions and previous work.
That difference is a useful place to start an AI visibility budget. Ask where a buyer needs help choosing, whether AI answers address that question, and what information your business can contribute.
Start with the purchase, not the industry
We use two questions to map a purchase: how much research does it take, and is it driven mainly by a need or a want? This framework is adapted from a matrix supplied by Saurav Panda. It is a planning aid, not a measured ranking of industries.
| Purchase | Question that could change the choice | Information worth improving |
|---|---|---|
| Planned renovation | What is excluded from this quote? | Scope, allowances, exclusions and project examples |
| Premium speaker | Will it work with my room and equipment? | Compatibility details and comparable tests |
| Repeat grocery order | Is it available, and when will it arrive? | Stock, delivery charges and fulfilment information |
| A small gift | Which option fits this occasion and budget? | Collections, prices and delivery cut-offs |
The same product can occupy different positions. Reordering pet food is routine; choosing food after a pet develops a dietary problem takes research. Identify the buyer and situation before deciding that a whole category needs more articles.
Check whether the opportunity reaches your business
A brand mention and a website visit are different outcomes. Pew Research Center analyzed March 2025 browsing from 900 US adults. Traditional-result clicks occurred on 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without. Search results were reconstructed later, and the study was observational. These figures justify tracking visits separately; they do not predict your conversion rate. Pew study and methods.
For your business, inspect ten questions from recent sales conversations. Save the answers from the AI surfaces customers use. Do they name providers, cite product pages or give general information? A page can be useful to readers without creating a realistic acquisition opportunity for your offer.
Answer four questions before allocating budget
Does the question affect a buying decision? Count how often it appears in sales or support records. A question generated by an AI assistant is a candidate to investigate, not evidence of demand.
Is there room for your offer in the answer? A renovation firm may be relevant to a local contractor comparison but absent from a general explanation of building regulations. Check the actual answers and sources before commissioning content.
Can you supply evidence? An annotated estimate, compatibility test or documented process gives a writer something useful to explain. If the only input is a claim about quality, gather evidence first.
Can the buyer take the next step? Verify service areas, availability, pricing and enquiry handling. An informative page cannot compensate for a broken form or unavailable product.
A failed check tells you what to do next. Missing evidence calls for research. Unclear pricing calls for a page correction. Neither automatically calls for a new blog post.
Run a pilot small enough to judge
For a renovation firm with repeated questions about exclusions, a pilot might include one comparison guide, two documented project examples and a clearer service page. Sales can use the guide immediately, giving it a job beyond earning citations. This is a planning example, not an AppearIn customer result.
Record the questions, current answers, pages to edit, owner, total cost and review date. Set a review window that fits the buying cycle; six to eight weeks can be a working schedule, but it is not a promise of indexing or leads. Track relevant mentions, accurate citations, identifiable referrals and qualified enquiries separately.
Decide in advance what would justify another round of work. A citation increase alone may be insufficient. A useful guide that resolves a recurring sales objection may justify maintenance even if AI referrals remain small.
Use the measurement guide to keep the observations comparable, then turn the strongest question into a content brief.
